Wide-Ranging, Well-Organised, Individual Art Lessons
Individual Art Lessons
All tuition builds upon essential skills for each individual student. This is in the context of each student's goals, whether it be to simply draw and paint at a higher level or successfully complete coursework or prepare for a final exam.
Available for ages 7 and above, including Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3, GCSE, A Level and Adult Learners of any age.
Taught with a structured plan so as to build skills and confidence step by step and in a sensible sequence from the essential foundations toward more specific skills.
One-to-one courses are also available for oil painting, pencil drawing, charcoal drawing and life drawing.
Pencil drawing lessons will often cover essentials such as achieving accuracy of shape, proportion and tone as well as the use of different pencils and techniques. A common goal regardless of age or level is to be able to draw more realistically. Guidance and practice in the essential areas will increase ability to make realistic drawings. This can be covered through any subject such as still life, portraiture, fantasy art, etc.
Charcoal is a medium that seems to be loved and hated in equal measures. Some people can't stand how dirty their hands (and faces) become when drawing with charcoal. Some (myself included) love how messy it is, how it can be manipulated, and how well suited it is for tonal drawing. It is in fact like a dry form of paint and is excellent practice in preparation for painting. The charcoal lessons focus more on the effective use of tone and mark making.
Pencil and charcoal lessons are available for all age / qualification categories.
Drawing from nude models is an age old tradition in artistic training and is excellent practice in terms of sharpening key drawing skills and powers of observation. As I also run a life drawing class at my local college, I can easily arrange models for one-to-one life drawing lessons. These lessons are only available to A Level students, Degree students and Adult Learners.
Oil and Acrylic Painting Lessons
Painting lessons are available for both acrylic and oil in relation to any subject.
Acrylic painting tuition covers essential skills through any subject. This would include brush techniques, colour mixing and how to build paintings in stages. This can be in relation to any style or subject, including landscapes, still life, portraiture and abstract painting.
Acrylic painting lessons are available for absolute beginners and those with some experience of acrylics.
Oil Painting Lessons
Oil painting lessons are available for all subjects and levels from absolute beginners to advanced.

The tuition for primary age children is designed to take each child at his or her own level and build skills in relation to their own interests through drawing, painting and project work.
The idea is to make lessons fun and enjoyable whilst improving essential skills.
Tuition is designed to provide the skills I am able to offer as a specialist art tutor and professional artist whilst taking into consideration the achievement targets for primary age children as specified within the national curriculum.
Parent / Guardian Attendance
In the case of Key Stage 1 & 2 tuition, a parent or guardian will be required to stay throughout each lesson. This in my experience can be very rewarding and useful for the parent in seeing their child's achievements as they happen and gaining an insight into how they can help them with their artwork at home.
Art Lessons For Secondary School Children - KS3 Art (Ages 11-14)
Key Stage 3 Art Lessons
The tuition for lower secondary age is designed to take each student at his or her own level and build skills in relation to their own interests through drawing, painting and personal project work.
The idea is to make lessons interesting and enjoyable whilst improving essential skills.
Tuition is designed to provide the skills I am able to offer as a specialist art tutor and professional artist whilst taking into consideration the achievement targets for lower secondary age students as specified within the national curriculum or in preparation for GCSE Art.
Parent / Guardian Attendance
When tutoring students aged below 16, I take into consideration advice and guidelines provided by The Tutor Pages (sadly no longer in operation), of which I was a long-term member. Therefore, as good practice, in the case of Key Stage 3 tuition, a parent or guardian will be required to stay throughout each lesson. This in my experience can be very rewarding and useful for the parent in seeing their child's achievements as they happen and gaining an insight into how they can encourage them with their artwork at home.
GCSE Art - Drawing, Painting and Coursework
GCSE Art Lessons - Improving Grades
The GCSE Art lessons are designed to increase artistic ability as well as develop the needed skills for successful coursework and prepare for a final exam.
Coursework is an essential part of GCSE Art & Design assessment. This therefore requires that students not only develop their ability to make works of art, but also to research, write and present ideas effectively. Students can be coached through the various aspects of their coursework during lessons, including how to understand and write about other artists.
Parent / Guardian Attendance
When tutoring students aged below 16 I take into consideration certain advice on good practice for tutors. Therefore, in the case of most GCSE students a parent or guardian will be required to stay throughout each lesson.
Specifications & GCSE Grades
Exam boards publish specifications which provide full details of their course aims, including target skills and abilities. Whether it be AQA or Edexcel, the relevant specifications are taken into account in order to work towards an improvement in predicted GCSE grades.
A Level Art - Drawing, Painting and Coursework
A Level Artwork
The lessons for A Level students include a real focus upon developing skills and personal artwork so that a student can stand out amongst their peers.
A Level Art courses demand much in terms of research, evaluation and presentation, not only of ones own work, but also of both historical and contemporary artists. Lessons are designed to help students better organise and deepen research and presentation within their coursework.

Art For Adult Learners - Drawing and Painting For Hobbie Or Career
I have tutored many adult learners who have a personal desire to become competent in painting and / or drawing. This may be as a personal hobby or with the aim of working towards a career as an artist. Some are retired, but many are still working and fit tuition and practice around work and family commitments, which in many cases works well.
I use thoroughly planned sequences of lessons for both drawing and painting in order to build skills step by step. I also have well-structured courses for oil painting (please follow link within Painting Lessons section).
Many parents now home school their children in the UK. If done correctly to include all of the needed teaching and social activities it can be very successful. And it can allow the freedom to focus upon subjects of particular interest.
There are numerous organisations out there now who support home schooling by providing information, advice and even correspondence courses, such as Oxford Home Schooling.
Home Schooling Art
Home schooling art can be a little more tricky than other subjects when it comes to GCSE and A Level. Due to the coursework elements of both GCSE and A Level Art not all exam boards accept private candidates (students entering for exams whilst not enrolled on an official course). For example, neither Edexcel or AQA provide for private candidates wishing to take GCSE Art & Design. The best option used to be Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design, which required no coursework assessment, but unfortunately they have also now discontinued offering this to private candidates.
Art Lessons for Home Education Students
Home schooling lessons are offered for primary, secondary and older students.
Lessons can be designed to follow the national curriculum as much as desired and work towards the needed exams, or simply concentrate on drawing and painting skills for enjoyment. The history of art can also be covered as a very rewarding accompaniment.
Learn Drawing and Painting Online
Online Art Lessons via Zoom
Due to distance or time constraints, sometimes the only way to receive lessons may be to connect online. This is obviously not quite the same as working together in person, but it can still work very well. It does also have some definite benefits, such as convenience and the ability to record sessions.
Fees for Online Lessons
The following hourly rates apply for lessons online:
Primary - £30
Secondary (including GCSE) £35
A Level & Adult Learner £40
Arrange Online Lessons
Please click on 'Book Lessons' in the menu to the left and a time can be arranged for either a free initial consultation via Skype / Zoom or a first lesson. Details of needed materials will also be given.
Note: a good speed internet connection and webcam will be needed. Sometimes internet connection can be lost, when this happens any remaining time paid for will be kept in credit to be used at the next available session.
Once a first lesson has been arranged payment must be made before the start of the lesson.
